The secret History of the Authority, Hawksmoor. Wildstorm. Mike Costa, Fiona Staples.
Being new to the old comics thing, It was bound to come to a point where I would need to make picks I hadnt read yet. Better yet, picks I hadn’t even hear of.
But I had heard of Fiona Staples. Actually my claim to fame is having sat next to her and Frazer Irving at the 24 hour comic day. Yeah, I am that close to being famous.
Anyways, I picked Hawksmoor because Fiona drew it, and I thought it would be cool to read something of which I knew the artist. It really gives me an excuse to name drop, and advertise my “claim to fame”. As per the last paragraph. But I digress.
With this book I could have been way in over my head, “The Authority” (as I have come to find out) has quite a history, and Hawksmoor, is a long time member.
I have to say, even though I am a newb in all this, I found the book accessible and fun. The whole concept was interesting and rather hip. A super hero who can talk to cities?.. cool. Also cool that he wears a suit, with bare feet.
This is Mike Costa’s first published work, and though I think there were a few places the book could use some refinement, it was a great read. I loved the dialogue with the city, the fun dialogue and strange plot twists. I may even pick up some other Authority books in the future, and for me, thats saying a lot. Read the book and listen to the podcast for all our opinions.
enjoy.

Yeah. This was a fun book to read. It has re-opened the Wildstorm door for me I can’t wait to find out what Hawksmoor and other Authority related heroes are up to. This was my official introduction to Fiona Staples art, and it’s pretty darn cool. Mike Costa wrote a great story for his first notable piece of work, i’ll be looking out to see what other things he’s up to. Hawksmoor is an amazingly cool character, there’s nothing I don’t like about him. His background is crazy cool, with being abused and experimented on as a child by humans from the 70th century. After doing a little research, I found out a little more on how the God’s played into the story and came away more forgiving than I was during the podcast, after all, I had just finished reading it an hour before we started…hehe. I did find out about this incident that I really want to check out, Hawksmoor wearing the city of Tokyo as a suit of armor….like wow…pretty intriguing. I would definatly say this book is accessible, good jumping on point.
I just finished listening to the show and let me say, great job! I wanted to make some points about what was discussed.
-Did you guys find it weird that the city gods were in the form of human animals? I wonder if there is some form of fusion between the the two as nature has been absorbed by the cities in the future.
-Also perhaps the God that came back to do battle with Hawksmoor was simply an avatar the the god. I say this because of the flash of the future the picture of these guys showed them to be monstrously big.
-I really like the way they dealt with the timeline in which they said that they could not send more people back in time as doing so injures “time” and something described as a blood clot would stop them from being able to attack Hawksmoor again. Something not all time traveling stories describe.
-Final point, another book that we all enjoyed! What does that make it, 2?
